Vampire Diaries: 1x15 - A Few Good Men (spoilers through 2x11)

1x15 - A Few Good Men

In the woods, a hiker runs across the vampire who escaped from the tomb in the last episode (I shall call him 'Harper', for it is his name). Harper is very polite and there's a lot of unspoken baggage here - the hiker is white, Harper is black and from a century and a half ago in the South. The show doesn't ever delve too deeply into the subject of slavery - Emily is called Katherine's handmaiden, but was likely thought of as her slave by most of the people in Mystic Falls. In one episode, Tyler's mother points out - when her son wants to know why their old family house (that has been long abandoned) had a cellar full of chains and is pushing for reasons behind that - that people don't like to talk about 'the old slave days'. We hear Stefan say that Damon left the Confederate army 'on principle' but don't hear the details of that. There's a lot left unspoken about the world that the Salvatores and the other vampires left behind.

Anyway, Harper finds out the day and year, and that his clothes are inappropriate, and he feeds on and kills the hiker, and takes his clothes as well. The hiker's clothes fit Harper reasonably well, but then the guy's cell phone rings. Harper takes it out, gives it a quick look, and tosses it on the ground, heading off. Now might be the time to mention that Harper has a daywalker ring.

Elena is trying to call Bonnie on the phone to check up on her, but she only gets voicemail - we learn that Bonnie is staying with her aunt. During the break between episodes was the funeral for Grams, we learn through Elena's conversation with Jenna, who has just come up to her. It made her think about her parents, so, she asks Jenna if she's found out anything about the adoption.

Jenna went through Elena's dad's old record books and found an entry from the night Elena was born. "Isobel Peterson" - Jenna suspected that the first name might be right but that the last wouldn't, so she went researching some more. We learn that Isobel Flemming and her friend Trudie Peterson live(d) in Grove Hill, Virginia, which is not far from Mystic Falls. And were both cheerleaders. Trudie still lives there and Jenna gives Elena her address, but Jenna couldn't find anything else on Isobel herself.

She does, though, have that weird coincidence that Alaric's (un)dead wife was named Isobel and was from Virginia. A little later that day, Elena is sharing this information with Stefan, who is taken back by the idea that Alaric's (un)dead wife might be Elena's mom, but Elena thinks that would be just too much of a wacky coincidence. She has the address for Trudie, but she's undecided on whether or not to use it. If Isobel is also the Isobel that was Alaric's wife, then it would mean that her birth mom is dead and Elena isn't sure that she wants to pile that tragedy onto the other ones that she's already carrying.

Stefan, meanwhile, has decided that this would be a good time to find out what Elena and Jenna know about Alaric's wife's death. Elena picks up that there's something that he's not telling her (again) and wants to know, but Stefan just dismisses it as saying that it would be a coincidence too many. I don't know, Stefan, why not tell Elena about it and see what she thinks? Stefan 'volunteers' to go with Elena if she decides to see Isobel. Elena is still undecided and she and Stefan share a hug. Stefan pulls away from the hug so that he can go check up on Damon.

"How's he doing?"
"He's dealing in... his own way."

your head's on fire but your heart is a wreck, the music tells us, over a scene of Damon drunk and dancing and feeding on various scantily-clad college women. Stefan comes home and turns on the light and turns off the music. Stefan wants to talk to Damon, semi-alone, so the women go hang out on the couches for a while.

"You're worried about me. That's nice. Don't be. There's no need. I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be? I spent the last hundred and forty-five years with one goal: get in that tomb. I succeeded. Granted, Katherine wasn't in there to be rescued but why dwell? It's so liberating, not having a master plan, because I can do whatever the hell I want."
"That's kind of what I'm afraid of."
"Relax, I haven't killed anyone in... too long."
"Those girls?"
"Will end up in their dorm. With headaches. Think they blacked out. Business as usual. Predictable that you didn't pull me over here for a pep talk. So, drink up. Spill it, brother."

The headaches likely coming from when he gets them to drink his blood in order to heal up the bitemarks that he's been leaving. So, several things:

a. he's not killing people. What he's doing is 'not okay', as Stefan put it to Elena back in "Lost Girls" but it's not going to end up with four dead women.

b. unlike the last time he thought Katherine was out of reach, he's not making any immediate plans to leave Mystic Falls. And, this time, he knows that Katherine is out there somewhere. That means that he did believe Anna when she said Katherine didn't care, though he will latch briefly onto the idea that Katherine was trying to send him a message through Isobel.

c. Stefan is genuinely worried about Damon and he's also instinctively acting protectively of him - Stefan doesn't tell Elena about his suspicions re: Damon possibly killing her birth mother. Well, both protectively and partly being his normal, secretive Stefan-self.

"There was a woman who you may have known a few years back, named Isobel - North Carolina, Duke."
"You want to discuss the women in my past right now, seriously?"
"You killed her."
"What's your point?"
"I... just want to know if you remember anything about her."
"That's like a needle in a haystack, Stefan."
"Well, think hard. It's important."

Damon claps Stefan on the shoulders and bends down to whisper in his ear: "Nothing is important. Not any more. Great chat. I have to go exploit some women in the name of grief. I'm sure you understand. TTFN said the Tri-Delt."

So, does the lampshade hanging that Damon does (re: his exploitation of the women) make things better or worse or not change them at all? What about Stefan's relatively low-key reaction - what does that say?

Caroline and Matt are watching... football (he calls it a show, so maybe it's "Friday Night Lights"?)? Caroline is getting bored and she thinks that Matt should take advantage of his house being empty. He leans over to kiss her, then pretends to be more interested in the show. She smacks him teasingly, and they start making out on the couch. Caroline, I'm going to point out, is still wearing the necklace that Elena gave her. It's so sweet to see how dedicated she is to that friendship gesture. Their fun is interrupted by Matt's mom coming home.

Outside some... building, Jenna and Alaric are hanging up a sign for the Mystic Falls Bachelor Auction. Alaric finds the notion of being raffled off a bit strange. They're fund-raising for Founder's Day. Jenna lampshades how obsessed the town is with events. As they finish hanging up the sign, Alaric and Jenna share a kiss. Jenna ruins the moment (her words) by asking Alaric about Isobel and determining (by showing him a picture) that his wife was the same woman as the one that she suspects is Elena's mother. Alaric is pretty surprised - Isobel had never mentioned giving up a baby when she was a teen.

Elena, meanwhile, has gone off to see Trudie. Because she has no idea that there could be anything supernatural related to her birth mother, she saw no reason to take Stefan up on his invitation to join her on the trip, so she's there alone. She knocks on the door and Trudie answers, pretending to have no notion what this could be about. Now, we learn later that Isobel is in contact with Katherine. The question here is - how much does Trudie know and when was she prepped for the chance that she might meet Elena? If the plan was that Elena would find out about her birth parents eventually - that her parents would tell her 'when she was old enough', just like they planned on filling her and Jeremy in on the Gilbert legacy - and John would have been aware of that, too, so might Isobel, since they were in contact.

Isobel and John are attempting to protect Elena, they say, with what they do toward the end of the season. We know that Katherine has had Mason in her pocket since before the Gilberts died - I'm guessing she started cultivating him when she realized that Elena was her doppelgänger. How exactly did she find out that information? Hmm. More thoughts on this as the plot unfolds in the later episodes.

Trudie asks Elena if she wants to join her for a cup of tea, very pointedly does not invite her in. Elena babbles about her impulsive decision to come over - she was driving, started thinking about her mom and then she thought about the address and, well, here she is. She finds out that Trudie hasn't seen Isobel for 17 years (unlikely) and, when she asks about her birth father, Trudie freezes up for a moment before claiming that she has no idea. Trudie is very on edge in the scene with Elena and, when she goes to the kitchen to grab the tea, she texts a quick message that "she's here".

Matt asks his mom how she's been - it's been a few months since he's seen her. All over the place, she says. When he makes a jab at how she never exactly got around to introducing Pete to him, she changes the subject to Caroline, dismissively calling her 'the favor of the month'. Matt defends her and his mom takes the chance to take a potshot at Caroline's mother (calling her 'Lezzie Forbes') and Matt tells her to stop it. He asks if she's heard from Vicki - she hasn't but she's not worried.

Stefan and Alaric meet in the town square. They share their new understanding that Isobel was Elena's birth mother. Alaric wants to know how much of the story Elena knows. Stefan tells him that she knows about Stefan being a vampire and that Alaric knows about vampires, but not about how vampires are related to her birth mother.

"Does she know about Damon and Isobel?"
"No. I couldn't tell her. Not until I was sure."
"You said you'd help me."
"I asked Damon without saying too much. He doesn't remember."
"Ask him again."
"Damon is not stable right now."
"You know, he murdered my wife or at the very least made a meal out of her. When has he been stable?"
"I'm telling you not to push this."
"Give me a reason not to."
"Your survival. How's that for a reason? I'll handle it but, for now, I need you to let it go."
"Is that what you'll tell Elena - let it go?"
"Leave Elena out of this."

When it comes to Damon, Stefan would like you to refer all problems to him. No, really. He means it. Anyway, he tells Alaric that if he gets something more to go on than just a name, he'll try asking Damon about it again. Alaric hands over a picture. That was an interesting scene. Very 'meeting on neutral territory' vibe to it. And Stefan is in a different place now than when he'd promised Alaric to help him re: Damon. He's more emotionally reconciled to Damon now.

Alaric flashes back to being woken up by Isobel typing away. She tells him about the odd patches of death that Mystic Falls gets every now and then - 'animal attacks' where bodies are drained of blood. She's convinced that it's vampires and she plans on proving it. He calls her a hotter Mulder and she reminds him that Mulder was right.

Back in present day, Trudie is sharing an old photo album with Elena. She talks about how Isobel was the star of the cheerleading team. She urges Elena to take a sip of tea and, when Elena does, she recognizes the taste. It's vervain. When Elena confronts her about it, Trudie tells her to leave. As Elena is leaving, she notices a man standing in the road. She hurries off, but he's not interested in her (for the moment).

Damon slides up to the bar at Mystic Falls, right next to Alaric. During their brief conversation, Alaric sets Damon's warning radar abuzzing. After Alaric leaves, Liz takes his place next to Damon.

"Listen, I need a favor."
"Have you been in love?"
"Excuse me?"
"Have you ever been so bent on someone to just... have your heart ripped out by them?"
"You forget I was married."
"Right. Gay husband. Two of what I'm having."

She tells Damon about the bachelor raffle and asks him to take part. She tells him that he's a hero to the town, single, 'and a catch'. Damon thinks it over for a moment, but finally agrees - "you know, a room full of women, clamouring for a date with me... sounds tasty." He asks her for a return favor, though - he has an odd feeling about Alaric and would sure appreciate if she checked up on him. Liz agrees, putting her still full glass back in front of Damon.

At Trudie's house, she answers the door. The man there thanks her for the text - she hadn't recognized him. "I didn't tell her anything. I kept my promise," Trudie says. Trudie is relieved to have her part done and tries shutting the door - but the man won't let her. She tells him that she's not inviting him in, but he's not a vampire, so it doesn't matter. When she tries to run up the stairs to escape him, he tosses her down them, killing her.

In the town square, Harper is taking in all the changes that time has brought the town. It's loud and strange but then he sees someone that he recognizes, who gives him a slow nod.

Elena comes up into Stefan's room, looking for him, and Damon is walking around, shirtless.

"You look... um..."
"Dashing? Gorgeous? Irresistible?"
"Wrecked. You look wrecked."
"No reason why. Do you know that I am one of Mystic Falls most eligible bachelors?"
"Huh."
"Yep."
"How are you doing?"
"Never better."

Damon doesn't have much of a mask here at all. He mouths words about being fine but doesn't bother really trying to act that way.

"What can I do for you? I'm a barrel of favors today. It's my new-found purpose - how can I help people?"
"I'm just meeting Stefan. We're going to the fundraiser."

Damon's fingers slip as he buttons up his shirt and he turns and asks Elena to help him. He's manufacturing a moment here, an excuse for Elena to be close that she might be willing to accept - and she does. She buttons up his shirt and shares her new information with Damon:
"So, I found out who my birth mother is."
"Blech, who cares? She left you. She sucks."

Elena is a little hurt by Damon's first reaction, but when he clarifies, they share a brief moment of understanding before Elena realizes that Stefan is in the room, and so she brushes past Damon to go over to him, tucking her hair behind her ear a little nervously.

Damon makes a crack about feeding off sorority girls and then saunters off, finishing up the buttons on his jacket with nary a trembling finger. Elena feels a bit taken advantage of and irritated.

"He's fine."
"He's Damon."
"Maybe this heartache will be good for him. It will remind him that he has one, even if it doesn't beat."
"Won't hold my breath."

Elena lets Stefan know about going to see Trudie - and that Trudie knows about vampires. "It can't be a coincidence." Stefan shows Elena the picture of Alaric's wife, which Elena recognizes as her birth mother. Stefan tells Elena that Alaric 'believes' that Isobel was killed by a vampire, but he asks her to hold off on talking to Alaric about it (trying to think of a way to build up to the 'Damon killed your mom' news gently?).

At the Grill, Carol announces that the tickets for the raffle are on sale. Proceeds go toward the annual Founder's Day celebration. This town is so obsessed with its founders. Jenna is telling Alaric that he looks good. Alaric apologizes for just going off after the big news that Jenna dropped on him earlier, and she apologizes for just dropping it on him like that. Jenna thinks that it might be nice for Alaric and Elena to have a chance to talk about Isobel, but Alaric isn't so sure.

Back at the Salvatore place:

"Where'd our girlfriend go?"
"She's on her way to the Grill. I wanted to talk to you."

I'm not certain how seriously to take Damon's comment here, re: Elena. Stefan just brushes by it without taking particular notice of it. With Damon, we know that he's attracted to Elena and we know that he likes and respects Elena. He trusts her. He has complicated feelings when it comes to her. He's not happy when he does something that hurts her (as he will do later in the episode when he taunts Alaric about Isobel). Compressing all that into something like 'our girlfriend' makes it something less serious and more manageable for Damon, I think.

Stefan shows Damon the picture of Isobel, seeing if it triggers any memories. None that he's willing to fess up to.

"Who wants to know?"
"I do."
"Who else wants to know?"
"Did you kill her?"
"Sorry. Don't know her."

Over at the Grill, Caroline is proud of how many older women are hitting on Matt. When Matt's mom (Kelly) comes up, Caroline says a cheerful 'hi' to her, but she's all about Elena, even calls Caroline the 'rebound girl' to her face. I'm guessing that this contributed to Caroline's attempt to hurry Matt over his feelings for Elena with the double-date plan in the next episode.

Elena looks over at Alaric, but he walks away.

Damon is telling Carol Lockwood about his plans for the date he'll take the woman who wins him on, and she's finding it very intriguing. He gives her the idea of rigging the competition so that she'll win him. When Liz comes in, Damon excuses himself and goes over to talk to her. Alaric checks out, with no record but he does have a tragic story of a missing wife in Carolina. The pieces fall into place for Damon and he thinks he knows why Stefan was asking him questions.

Stefan arrives at the Grill while Carol is getting the bachelors to share a little information about themselves. Carol asks Alaric to share a fun fact about Mystic Falls. He looks at Damon and is silent for all the things he could say, so Carol moves on. When Carol asks Damon about his hobbies - if he likes to travel - Damon thinks that it's the perfect opportunity to be a complete asshole to Alaric and taunt him about his (un)dead wife. He mentions knowing Alaric's wife and Stefan's head turns toward him in a hilarious 'oh, shit' way, while Elena starts straightening up in horror. Jenna notices the look on Elena's face and Elena excuses herself - Stefan follows.

So, since Jenna has the pieces of Alaric's wife being Elena's birth mom, then did she just think that Elena's reaction is because she realized that Damon slept with her birth mom? Man, conversations I wish we could have heard.

"Elena."
"He killed her? Damon was the vampire that killed her?"
"I don't know what happened. Alaric said that they never found the body."
"Oh, my god. Stefan."
"I know. I'm sorry - I wanted to tell you but I just... I wanted to know more."
"I was feeling sorry for him. Hoping that this whole Katherine thing would change him. I'm so stupid."
"He doesn't know about the connection to you. I thought about confronting him but he's already so on edge-"
"Why are you protecting him?"
"Because... you're not the only one hoping that he might actually change."

Stefan was hoping to find something that maybe made Damon look a little bit better or a way to break the news to Elena gently, I suspect. Damon kinda screwed that plan up. He doesn't know about the connection to you, Stefan says, like that's what matters the most here. And, to him (and to Damon), it is. He's not trying to hurt you, Stefan is trying to tell her. Just Alaric. Which doesn't actually make his actions any less of a crappy thing to do, but Stefan is, as he's just confessed to Elena, hopping back on the 'hope for Damon' train.

Before they can get further into the conversation, Elena spots the man from earlier. So, yeah, Isobel was trying to draw Elena's attention, not stifle it. She wants Elena to be curious about her and to find her, because she needs to talk to her anyway. But she wants to try to set it up on her own terms, hence all the complex 'stay away from me' smokescreens that she puts up. That's my theory.

They go back inside the Grill for now, conversation on the backburner.

It's time for the auction. Kelly wins the plumber that she didn't want. When she goes over to redeem her ticket, Caroline congratulates her. Kelly flat-out tells Caroline to stop trying, because Kelly doesn't like her and she won't ever. Caroline's face falls and I want to give her so many cuddles.

Elena, a little sniffly, runs right into Damon. Elena confronts him about rubbing Isobel into Alaric's face. Stefan doesn't really want this conversation to be happening, but he can't stop it.

E: "Just when I was starting to think there was something redeemable about you."
S: "Elena."
D: "Am I missing something here?"
E: "Did I forget to mention earlier, when we were talking about my birth mother, the one that gave me up? Her name was Isobel. Go ahead. Reminisce about how you killed her."

And the second that Damon realizes that he's personally hurt Elena, he loses his cock-sure asshole smile. He looks at Stefan, knowing that he just screwed with something that he's realizing actually does matter to him, contrary to his protestations earlier in the episode that nothing does anymore. And Stefan is trying to play peacemaker here and keep things even and smooth.

Elena leaves the Grill, Stefan following. He offers to drive her home. And there's the man from earlier. He has a message from Isobel. "Stop looking," he says. "She doesn't want to know you. She doesn't want to talk to you." Stefan recognizes that the man is under compulsion and when Elena lets him know that the message was received, he backs up into traffic, timing it so that he gets hit hard, killing him. Elena finds the man's cellphone on the ground and picks it up.

At the raffle, Jenna win Alaric. And Carol did, indeed, rig the contest so that she would win Damon. Unfortunately for her, he's not currently anywhere to be found. When Alaric sees that Damon is gone, he heads off, too. He has another flashback, this one of a very telling fight with his wife. He wanted them to have a chance to be a normal couple. She didn't.

He's always said that he wanted to find out what happened, but he's had always a suspicion. She was obsessed with proving vampires real and she wanted something 'more' than normal.

Back at the Donovan house, Matt is leading his mom to the couch. She confesses that the reason that she came back home is because it's over with Pete. Matt reassures her and comforts her and it is intensely depressing.

At the Salvatore house, Alaric would like to have a 'talk' with Damon. With a stake. Damon easily tosses Alaric over the couch and briefly admires his courage (though probably not thinking much of his brains).

"What have you done to my wife?"
"Do you want me to tell you I killed her? Would that make you happy? Because I think you know what happened."
"I saw you feeding on her."
"Yeah. I did. And I wasn't lying. She was delicious. Oh, come on - what do you think happened? Not an inkling? Never considered the possibility? I turned her."
"Why?"
"She came to me. All pathetic, looking for vampires. There was something about her, something I liked... something special."

Damon considers this in the new knowledge that she's Elena's birth mother and thus of Katherine's human line.

"You turned her because you liked her?"
"No, I slept with her because I liked her. I turned her because she begged me to. But you knew that, too, didn't you? Hmm. I guess she wasn't happy at home. Wasn't happy with life in general. Wasn't happy with you."

This time, when Alaric attacks him, Damon turns the stake back on him.

"This is a shame. We're kindred spirits, abandoned by the women that we love. Unrequited love sucks. Sounds like I got a lung. Which means I get to sit here and watch you die."

Damon tosses the stake down, picks his drink back up, and does just that. Some time later, Stefan comes in and takes in the scene.

"You know what - Isobel came to me. She found me. If she's related to Elena, that means she's related to Katherine. Maybe... Katherine sent her to me."
"Stop it. You don't have to keep looking."
"It can't be a coincidence Isobel sought me out, hmm? Can't."

He leaves Stefan there with Alaric's body, attempting to fill himself up with his desperate delusional hope again, which is the last thing that Stefan wants to have happen. He doesn't want to lose his brother to Katherine again, not when he was only just having hopes of getting him back. Stefan sits there with Alaric's body for a little while but then Alaric's fingers twitch and Stefan watches him come back to life. Stefan thinks that Alaric must have turned, but Alaric knows that can't be it and then he remembers the ring and what Isobel told him when she gave it to him.

"Promise me you'll always wear it. It'll protect you from all the things that go bump in the night."

Stefan boggles over the magic ring.

Back at Elena's house, she looks at a picture of herself with her parents. She tries the last number on the cell phone and hears a woman's voice - when she tries asking "Isobel", she's hung up on. Confirmation (of sorts).

Harper makes his way through the misty woods, ending up a house. He knocks and the woman that he saw in the square answers the door. She calls Pearl to the door (Anna following). Pearl instructs "Miss Gibbons" to invite Harper in.

Together: "Night of the Comet" - "Family Ties" (3 episodes; exact time uncertain, at least a week)
1st Breakup: "Family Ties" - "You're Undead to Me" (2 episodes; 4 days)
1st Reunion: "You're Undead to Me" - "Lost Girls" (2 episodes; 2 days)

Timeline:

It's day and Harper is walking around in the woods, still in his clothes from a century and a half ago.

There's time enough between the episodes for the funeral for Grams to happen and for Matt and Caroline to settle more into their relationship.

The episode itself covers a single day and night.

Time covered: 1 day/1 night

Total time; pilot-FNB: 6 days/7 nights

I think that the biggest time jump - roughly 1 1/2 months, rests in between these two.

Total time; FT-Haunted: 9 days/9 nights

Total time; 162C: 2 nights/1 day

Total time; HR-Bloodlines: 4 days/3 nights

Total time; Unpleasantville: 3 days/3 nights

Total time; CotD-FMO: 2 days/2 nights

Time jump here, enough time for a funeral and for Bonnie to go off to stay with her aunt.

Total time; AFGM: 1 day/1 night

Shirtless shots:

Well, there's the dead hiker, but that's not a very cheery shirtless shot.

1. Matt and Caroline take off their shirts for some serious couch making-out.

2. Damon when Elena goes looking for Stefan.

Bonnie's Visions:

Nada.

In this episode we see Damon reeling as he tries to come to terms with the fact that the woman he's loved for over a century didn't give a damn about him - AND process the fact that he might actually have friend in Elena.

It's interesting to see Damon's problems in light of Alaric freaking out as he wants to know what to do about Damon - well he knows, but can't get past it because he hasn't dealt with it.

Both of them are realizing that the women they loved didn't love them back - or not enough.

So in that sense this is a good episode for them.

And Stefan is now becoming more and more invested in what happens to his brother - because he is seeing what Katherine meant to Damon.

Stefan was compelled to love Katherine, but not Damon, and now that he knows that, Stefan is seeing the damage she left.

Yes, and the Salvatores don't walk way, neither does Elena - which shows that they are all more aware of what's real. In fact Elena WENT AFTER Stefan to make it clear that she was sure she wanted to be with him.

<3s.

Stefan is circling Damon like any good brother/beta making sure his alpha can lick his wounds and HEAL. And he is blatantly showing his teeth from now on, threatening people that come at Damon because that's Stefan's JOB, and now, he feels that he has the RIGHT, and indeed, to him, the HONOR of doing that. And he takes it VERY seriously.

There is a REASON I think of them as very lupine, and OH how Stefan WANTS to hug Damon. If he could get Damon just a bit tired and tipsy and them GLOMP him? STEFAN WOULD BE ALL OVER THAT.

*is so utterly charmed*

Fraternal wrestling - it's what's on Stefan's list for Christmas.

*g*

Now that he knows that Damon COULD lean on somebody if they presented themselves as an option his hand went up and he hopped into place. SUCH a sweet younger brother.

Especially since whenever Stefan DOES touch Damon, patting him on the face, ANYTHING, putting hands on his shoulders, there is a bit of Damon that is just shocked Stefan WANTS to be this close to him and that he isn't throwing words or a fist at his face.

I love that NOW Stefan can talk Damon down and Damon is LISTENING, because they are building up their trust. If Stefan DID propose a night of darts and beer, Damon would be way less suspicious now. They could make it a family night!

Come on show, fulfill our wishlist!
