Angel 5x01 - Conviction
Oct. 5th, 2003 01:20 amFinally got around to rewatching this. Did promise I'd talk about fandom stuff again eventually.
Loved it even more the second time around.
Figured out why I like Eve. Actually, someone (wish I could remember who) comparing her to Lilah hit on it for me, though I think they meant it in a bad way. Anyway, the word they used was 'impish' and I remember thinking exactly. I like her because she's impish. She teases and jabs and hits Angel in vulnerable spots, but you never get the impression that she's really out for blood. After all, he's part of the agency now. Lilah was too intense for this, I think, and Eve is less intense.
And Eve does want him to succeed. Preferably, she'd like him to succeed and get corrupted in the process, but I don't think that she's terribly concerned about that part. It's not her job to care. Also, I think she believes that it's an inevitable part of the job. Either way, she's just there to let him know how things work and to tweak his chain a little.
And I adored the strong Angel/Wesley friendship vibe. They just interact so naturally together. The argument about Angel hitting Fries, the adorable "I didn't think you'd turn evil so fast", the way Wes gave orders, the way they both responded to Harmony's 'boss' and neither looked askance at the other. Greatness. They've got a partnership of equals going on, no matter whose name it is on the letterhead.
After more consideration, I adore the really long take. Of course, the second I realized that it was there, I adored it, so I wasn't expecting my opinion to change. I mean, it isn't for every week, but it does show us some of the set-up of W&H and exactly how confusing things can get for our guys. And how amazing all our actors are, o' course.
And the Wes/Gunn was cuteness. "Does this mean I have to call you 'Wesle'?"
And I'd love to see/hear Gunn sing us some PoP.
Adored Angel. And, on first viewing, I was thrown by his new look (he's beefed up and there's the hair - first seen in the Dido video White Flag), but now that I've adjusted, I really like it. Because, yeah, it was the good kind of beefing up. Mrow.
Right. Shallowness not the most attractive trait in the world (Wesley was hot, too. And I didn't mind seeing Fred's legs. And Knox is more adorable by the second. And I love Gunn in suits.).
And I like the plot. The emotional connection that it gave us to last season and to Connor was... nice. Still miss him. And wow, that Fries was such a scumbag. His own son. Yeck. Liked seeing Gunn (The defense submits that it has learned how to swim.), Fred (Do we have an antidote department?), and Lorne (Yikes!) at work. Liked seeing Wesley ordering people around and that's not at all because I think that it's hot. Liked seeing Angel fight and that's definitely because I think it's hot. Also, he was adorable when dorky, which is not always the case.
Overall, definitely an 'A' episode to me (Of course, one needs to take in account the fact that it being an ME production automatically makes it a 'B', because when I go over episodes that I like least in my head, I still end up giving them around 'B's. So. My measuring? Not terribly discriminating).
Also? God, I love this icon. Mmm. Naked Angel.
