Despite the seemingly incurable case of shyness that I came down with during the Con, I had a ton of fun. Probably few of my opinions will be deep, but they will definitely be from the heart, yo. They'll also be honest, so if I wasn't fond of a vid, I will say that, but I'll always say why.
We started out with I Just Wanna Take You Home (song by Nick Carter; vid by Merry Lynne). The fandom was Smallville and the point of view character was Lex. IJWTH was a highly successful and funny start to Premieres -- it was simply hilarious and got a wonderful reaction from the room. The clips that were chosen were incredibly apt and it was really really funny.
The next vid was Valentine Heart (song by Tanita Tikaram; vid by gwyneth) and focused on Wesley from Angel. It was much with the sadness. Very good and pretty depressing. I really liked it and liked that it didn't shy away from the tragic ending of Wesley's character. And there was Lilah, too. I enjoyed the emotional echoing of the characters, the connection of the cut throats. That really is what connected them, even before it happened -- was all about blood and isolation and finding connection in unexpected yet oddly deep places. Really good vid that made me appreciate the whole Wes and Lilah thing more.
Spooky (song by The Rascals; vid by Mudd) was a vid that I really wanted to like. The fandom was Sleepy Hollow, a movie that I really do love. But I'm not sure that the romance had enough appropriate scenes for the song and some of the clips that were chosen didn't resonate. There was some nice imagery, but on the whole, the vid didn't make much of an impression on me.
Can't Find My Way Home (song by Blind Faith; vid by Barkley) is a vid that I feel like I really need to watch again to decide how I feel about it. The fandom is Stargate SG-1 and the problem is that the second that the song started, I hated it. Hated the song. Totally rubbed me the wrong way and I honestly couldn't concentrate on the vid, because I was so busy hating the song. But I know that I love some of Barkley's other vids, so I feel that if I were prepared for the song, I could probably concentrate on the vid (because if I really like a vid, I can get past songs that I wouldn't normally listen to).
What It's Really About (song by Northern Pikes; vid by Seah and Margie) was a really beautiful vid that focused on the father in Joan of Arcadia and on his journey throughout the first season. It made my heart tighten in my chest and made me long to see what happened next. If I end up watching JoA next season, I'm blaming Seah and Margie.
Sing, Sing, Sing (song by Benny Goodman; vid by Abby) was a multi-fandom vid that was fun but mostly unremarkable. It didn't stand out for me at the time and it doesn't stand out in my mind after the fact. Actually, I can barely remember it now.
No Fear, No Hate, No Pain (No Broken Hearts) (song by The Eurythmics; vid by P.R. Zed) was a vid in a fandom that I'd had no knowledge of before VividCon. When the vid started, I was blase, but by the time that the vid ended, I was left with a distinct longing to find and watch Equilibrium. I'm seriously thinking of trying to find it on netflix so that I can rent it. Very evocative and intriguing vid.
Serenity (song by Godsmack; vid by Luminosity) was a Firefly vid. This means that I have no objectivity at all, because thinking about Firefly immediately puts me in this half-broken-hearted, half-determined state of mind. Just seeing their faces is enough to make my heart jelly. So, I absolutely loved this vid and think that it was utterly wonderful, but I know that a part of that comes from my still fierce love and protectiveness for the show.
Elevation (song by U2; vid by Kitze Productions) was a lot of fun to watch. A Queer as Folk (US) vid and an exploration of Justin, mostly via sex. And it had Justin the way I like him best -- silent. I couldn't hear him, which made me happy.
Blue on Black (song by Kenny Wayne Shepherd; vid by Killa) was a chilling and atmospheric Deadwood vid. I've never seen Deadwood but for the minutes that this vid lasted, I very much cared about the characters of the show and how they reacted to tragedy.
Invisible (song by Clay Aiken; vid by Diana Williams) shared most of the strengths and weaknesses that are common to most of Diana Williams' vids. Playing 'find the fandom' can be a lot of fun, but it also has the potential to leech out the emotional power of the individual pairings.
The Mountain (song by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer; vid by Melina and shalott) is amazing. A Lord of the Rings vid, it parallels Frodo and Aragorn in their trials and travels throughout the three movies and does so beautifully. Of course, part of that power comes straight from the song -- if I could recommend only one artist, I would ask that people listen to one of Dave and Tracy's CDs (there are three -- When I Go, Tanglewood Tree and Drum Hat Buddha). They were a wonderful duo and I was actually at the 2nd Annual Dave Carter Memorial Tribute yesterday, so I'm feeling particularly emotional over it. Lord of the Rings has the sweeping visuals that can do justice to the sheer beauty of the song and if I had to pick a favorite vid from the con, it would be The Mountain. It was simply exquisite.
Confrontation (song from the Jekyll and Hyde Soundtrack; vid by Dianne and Lizbet) was a Farscape vid that focused on what I've found one of the most fascinating aspects of Farscape -- the relationship between John and Scorpius. This vid reminded me just how amazing I found that particular dynamic and left me with the want to go and watch the Farscape episodes that I haven't seen yet.
Two Words (song by Kanye West; vid by sisabet) was an Angel vid that managed to sum up everything that I adored about the show and the way that it ended. It was a wonderful and emotional tribute to the power of Angel and felt very much like a reflection of how I felt when the black slammed down at the end of the last episode.
'Til the Day I Day (song by Third Day; vid by soappocrates) was a Smallville Lex vid that I instinctively liked, but it was dense, so I think that it's another vid that I'll need to watch again in order to fully sort out the reasons why.
Jig of Life (song by Kate Bush; vid by shalott) was a Witchblade vid. I've never seen Witchblade. I've never felt the desire to see Witchblade. This vid, though, kicked almighty ass. Very, very cool.
On my flight home, I sat next to a Queer as Folk (US) fan. How do I know this? I spotted her watching it on her laptop. We actually ended up talking about it for a while and she was vaguely interested in the idea of looking up vids. I also pimped out the UK version to her and she was very much interested in seeing how it matched and where it diverged.
Very cool.

Date: 2004-08-17 01:23 am (UTC)I haven't seen most of the other vids but I can comment on this one in that I think it's satisfying for me because not only was it awesomely on beat and took advantage of the addicting beats but that it outlined the emotional journey of the pairing; the screenshots subtly change throughout every arc and her clip choices are amazing. That shot in particular with Lex hitting the tank of krptonite was shivery because even at one of the moments of greatest distrust (so far) between the two, Lex *still* would be there for Clark, and it the intersection between emotional reaction resonating with the utter joy and satisfaction of that telling movement to the climax of the song (kinda like the way the earth blew up at the right moment in Haunted). ::beams:: I *adore* that vid, can you tell?

Yeah, and I totally agree. I just really want to see the vid again, which is a good sign. But yeah, I got a real sense of love and obsession and all the things that are so Lex -- which is part of why the busyness worked so well for me, because that's Lex, his mind is always working eleven ways from Tuesday.

Date: 2004-08-17 08:26 pm (UTC)And I agree with the busyness. I think it really came through that it was Lex thinking all those things although perhaps the picture in picture thing wasn't the best way...though I think if she maybe feathered the edges that might've made it less jarring? I dunno.

I don't know. I liked the effect, thought it could have maybe been a touch easier to comprehend, but I definitely have enough interest in the vid to want to rewatch to check out those things. Even the sharpness worked for me, because Lex's mind is razor and glass.
