This hasn't occurred to me at all, mostly because I don't see these kinds of intentions and cues in either actor's performance, especially in the context of a show where signals are not generally subtle -- think Damon re: Elena, think Jeremy re: Bonnie, think Tyler re: Caroline, and so on.
Oh, I'm very sure that it's not intentional on the part of the show - they explicitly had Stefan compare Caroline to Lexi, after all (with whom I did get entirely platonic vibes both ways). But Stefan is hitting my 'hey, strong friendship and admiration - this could blossom into a beautiful love relationship!' button pretty hard.
Does anyone prefer Stefan/Elena to Damon/Elena? *ggg* I get that; it's possibly my favourite dynamic ever, friends to lovers, although more often than not, shows prefer to break my heart with the execution, see Fringe for the latest example...
Hee! I have a couple of people on my livejournal flist who do. Apparently, it's because they're 'normal' and 'healthy', neither of which I actually see all that much in the relationship (From my PoV, I see them pretending to be normal and I think that Elena is a strong force for honest and open communication in her relationships, but... yeah. Ha. Different people see different things).
