This show:

a. Awesome female characters. A bunch of them. Including good, complex female friendships.

b. Really talented and attractive cast.

c. Stuff happens! All the time. Characters actually talk to each other and tell each other things. It's very refreshing.

d. Does not shy away from the creepy and bloody aspects of the vampire legend.

e. And for people who love shows with intense sibling relationships, this show has two brothers who pretty much take the grand prize.

My current hope is that season two does not disappoint me (the way that S2 of Prison Break did). Fingers crossed.

Under Control

Stefan is hot when he's detoxing.

Hah, Elena's Uncle John that everyone hates. Even Matt doesn't like him. That takes some work.

Even all the other council members hate him! Man, what has he done to this town?

Damon's BFF Sheriff Forbes is such a helpful connection for him to have.

Aw, poor Stefan. He's trying so hard.

It's nice that Damon and Elena are openly sharing information and whatnot. They have this interestingly tense comfort level with each other.

Tiny amounts of honesty between Elena and Jeremy! Still not enough but at least she's shared the big adoption news and he's already teasing her about it.

Subtitle of this episode: everyone drinks.

Again, Damon and Elena with the sharing of information in a friendly way. Also, he gives her a deep red rose.

Damon kills Elena's Uncle John. That was way too easy. He's so not dead.

And Elena lies straight to her little brother's face. Yeah. That's going to end well.

Oh, ew. Boozy mom, please don't hit on your dead daughter's ex-boyfriend. Please.

And Elena and Matt walk in on the results of said hitting on, and Matt finally snaps. Then Tyler snaps and just beats on Matt until Alaric pulls him off.

Oh, my. That intense stare that Stefan is leveling at Matt's mom (I don't remember her name) and her bleeding forehead is... focused. Kinda hot.

Ha, knew Uncle John couldn't be dead.

So, John - totally Elena's bio-dad. Just saying (which means that she's actually still a blood Gilbert).

Good job on making Jeremy suspicious of you and leading him to ransacking your room, Elena!

Matt's mom, I'm sure that you're always sorry and that you never mean it enough to fucking stop drinking so... I don't care. I don't care about your stupid excuses (man, though, Melinda Clarke does a painfully accurate alcoholic parent, gotta say. I love her and I hate Matt's boozy mom). And Matt is finally fed up, too. Good for him.

I'm glad that Stefan is being honest with Elena, like he said he would.

I feel bad that he tried so hard but he couldn't help himself in the end.

Miss Mystic Falls

Stefan, are you lying your ass off to the person that you promised you would tell the truth to? Bad boy. I was just congratulating you on your honesty in the last episode, too.

BONNIE! Missed you! So glad to see you again! You did something to your hair, didn't you? Not as good as your last look.

Oh, Bonnie has demoted Elena as her best friend and elected Caroline to the position. Ouch.

And Stefan is lying his ass off to Damon as well.

Couple of really good Stefan-Damon scenes in a row. So, I wonder if Damon is going to tell Elena about Stefan drinking human blood. Hmm.

John and Isobel share a 'mutual interest'. *cough*Elena*cough*

Curling up Elena's hair makes her look even more like Katherine.

And Damon tells Elena. I love how he's only annoyed because of the timing. Oh, Damon.

Stefan really can't handle Elena knowing the truth. Ouch.

I like the song being played during Damon and Elena's dance. Also, I see your eyes, Elena. He is very attractive, I agree. It was interesting because both of them were preoccupied with Stefan before the dance started but then during the dance, you could see each of them get caught up in it - the 'intimacy of the near touch' and then the change when the touch happens.

Also, eep, poor Amber. Will he be able to stop before he kills her?

Aw, Caroline won. She definitely deserved it, so yay for her.

Oh, good, Amber isn't dead (yet). Man, the mind-whammy to make the victims pliable is so creepy.

This show is really good at intense. Stefan feeding on that girl; Elena and Damon and Bonnie finding them. And Elena getting Stefan to get close to her so that she can dose him and she and Damon can detox him (they might have very different reasons but, right now, they want the same thing).

This episode also showed again how well Damon and Elena work together (especially when the goal is Stefan). They're pretty good at backing-up each other's plays. And it's sweet that Damon stayed to keep Elena company at the end.

You know, sometime (probably after I've caught up on episodes), I'm going to see if I can go through and pin down exactly why I like Stefan and Damon more than Angel and Spike (I was mostly about the humans on those shows). I think it might be partly related to the whole siblings theme, but I'm not sure. I'll think about it more in a while (because, yeah, it took me until season four of Angel to get on the Angel-train and I was very off and on about Spike. Both the Salvatore brothers, though, I just enjoy).

Also, so much happens in this show. In every episode, tons of stuff happens. It makes it seem like more episodes have passed than have really actually passed. Like, someone mentions something and it feels like it happened forever ago, because so much has happened in between, but then I check back and it was just in the previous episode.

Blood Brothers

Ooo! Staging a rescue of Katherine. Nice to see that. And that's how they died. Trying to rescue Katherine.

So, Katherine had them prepped to be turned at any moment. She was just having too much fun to bother killing them just yet.

Elena is sleeping over at Stefan and Damon's most nights during Stefan's enforced detox.

Elena and Stefan's phone conversation was hilarious and delightful. "Does he have a favorite kind of animal blood that he prefers?" "Ew."

"You're very trusting of him, given the circumstances."
"So are you or you wouldn't be leaving."

Yeah, Elena has your number, Damon.

Jeremy and Anna. For all that she's a vampire, she's probably still a more healthy relationship for Jeremy than human!Vicky and Jeremy was. But still not actually healthy.

So, Damon was willing to fade away because the only reason he wanted to turn was Katherine and he didn't see any point in going on without her. And Stefan is the one who was willing to kill in order to live.

Henry is so laid-back. He is amusing the hell out of me. 'yeah, the founding fathers tried to kill me. w/e, I'm over it.'

Aw, bye, Henry. You were very likable, as vampires go.

Stefan is really hot when he gets all intense about blood. Also, damn, his own father is the one that shot him and Damon. And when Stefan said he was willing to go off and die, not feed and become a vampire, that wasn't enough for his dad, who wanted to kill him again personally.

Alaric and Damon really are... kinda buddies almost, aren't they? Damon, you almost have a friend!

Alaric is "through with Isobel". It's kinda too bad for him, then, that the next episode is called "Isobel".

Hee! Elena and Damon. He 'complains' about her being there, then plops down on the couch and puts her feet in his lap.

Aw, Elena wants Damon to tell his side of the story.

Ah, Stefan walked Damon through his first feeding, even though Damon was fully willing to let himself die. And that was the basis of Damon's bitterness toward Stefan.

So, yeah, apparently Damon was not on board Katherine's threesome train.

And Pearl and Harper are dead. I hope Anna doesn't get killed, too! I really like her.

We end on Isobel's return (to say 'hi' to Alaric).

So, tiny bits of this reminded me of "Amends" (from BtVS) but there was no magic snow here, which makes me happy. Though Elena and Stefan's hugs are weird sometimes. They're having sex, so it's a little odd that they want to keep their lower halves apart while hugging.

Isobel

My theory is the Isobel wants to meet on her terms because she's realized that Elena is determined enough that she'll find her regardless and Isobel wants to try to keep the power in the relationship (if there must be a relationship).

Isobel is not on the 'good vampires' train, though, no matter what. She set up an innocent (compelled) man to kill her former friend and then kill himself after he'd tried to get Elena to back off. She is on the 'bad vampires' train and does not have even a tiny ounce of trust from me.

And Alaric should stake her ass.

D: "You've successfully cured him of anything that was interesting in his personality."
E: "Don't forget who helped me!"
D: "I hate myself."

Then he gets this cute little genuine smile going on and his eyelashes kind of flutter down and he's just really enjoying having this friendly, teasing conversation with Elena.

Aw, Caroline just wants all her friends to get along. She's such a sweetheart these days.

The merry band of... whatever they are: Elena, Damon, Stefan, Alaric. You four are awesome just being in the same room with, like, two lines total. ♥

Damon - 'Elena shouldn't have to see her mom if she doesn't want to! Possible killing spree if she refuses? Whatever. Elena not wanting to see her mom is more important. I am concerned about Elena's emotional health! Oh. Right.'

Isobel's 'welcoming' smile is hilariously fake. Man, she has completely put away anything human about herself.

Damon is so annoyed that he can't be in there himself! Hee.

Alaric: "Hell, you're a dick and you kill people and I still see something human in you."

That would be Damon Salvatore's charm, all right.

And Damon goes back to staring at the building and wishing he could be in there, all while trying to deny that he's letting himself feel emotions. You aren't fooling anyone, Damon Salvatore!

Oh, woah. I'm... not sure whether or not it's smart for Damon to be admitting to Isobel (and thus to Katherine) that Elena is someone he cares about but... it's kinda awesome even if it isn't smart. I think I'm going to rewatch that bit.

Isobel looks so surprised. Not expecting that at all. She's like 'this is not how Katherine prepped me re: Damon's reaction!'

Bonnie! Aw, thank you. Thank you for coming and being awesome for Elena again. ♥

Caroline taking charge in the wake of Matt's 'accident' = hot.

(and, of course, Damon's confession that he cares about Elena is being used against... well, Elena at this point, but eventually him)

Well, Uncle John, not so much of a mister-know-it-all now that Isobel has kidnapped your nephew and taken away your resurrection ring.

Oh, that complex interplay in the Bonnie-Damon-Elena-Stefan scene was delightful.

Isobel says that Damon's in love with Elena and Damon quickly looks over at Stefan, who is looking down. And when Elena and Stefan hug, they each take their separate opportunity to glance at Damon.

... clearly, the only answer is a threesome. Just saying.

(okay, last time, Damon and Stefan weren't willing to share but maybe they've grown as... people. Could be)

So, Jeremy - secret time-travel love child of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki? I can't be the only one who sees this.

Also, that was a very intense scene with Elena and Jeremy. Well done.

Stefan starts a conversation about the whole... you know, Damon being just a bit in love with Elena (Damon is willing to admit that they are good friends). Stefan is not aboard the threesome train, sadly (shame because I think Damon 'our girlfriend' Salvatore might have been willing this time. And Elena is clearly getting more and more attached to Damon plus is attracted to him. It could work!). So, Stefan's going for the 'warning Damon off Elena' thing but, luckily for him, Damon has a distracting trump card. He is intelligent and observant and noticed that John is totally Elena's bio-dad, like I said ages ago. Good distraction, Damon. A+. Knew I liked you for a reason.

You know, it's been obvious that Damon has been developing fluffy bunny feelings for Elena, but I'm so surprised that the show already made it public knowledge (well, public to the two people who it matters to hear). This show is always going at 100 mph. How does this show pack so much into every episode without it feeling like it's rushing? Some shows cover a tenth as much ground and feel like outlines, but this show moves so fast, covers so much, but is still so rich with characters and relationships.

Another of the things that I want to examine in more depth are Elena's shifting moral lines. Because she's grayed up a lot since she was introduced as a character.

Oh, no. I was afraid that Bonnie might have lied to Elena. Oh, man. She didn't break the device. Okay, yes, vampire weapon = good. Mostly. It's the 'mostly' part that's going to matter to Elena in... oh, probably the next episode. And giving the bad guys a weapon never seems like the best plan.

Founder's Day

Season finale. This should be exciting.

Elena is pretty much dressed up as Katherine (I'm guessing we can blame Founder's Day for this - and why is it "Founder's Day" and not "Founders' Day". There were multiple founders).

This would obviously be the perfect time for the real Katherine to show up.

"I'm here to eat cotton candy and steal your girl."

"Elena is not Katherine."
"Right, she's not."

And up walks Elena, looking like Katherine. Hee.

So, Anna gives Jeremy a vial of her blood. He's not drinking it but I bet that it's going to get use at some point.

Ah, and Stefan has started making passive-aggressive swipes at Damon (I do think his assumption that Damon would just drop that on Elena is unfounded - Damon cares about Elena's feelings. He would attempt to emotionally prepare her for it as much as Stefan would). Stefan obviously is feeling a bit insecure with regards to the whole situation.

And Damon is right there to make Stefan and Elena feel uncomfortable (and to continue to try to turn the situation into a joke that no one needs to take seriously).

Damon giving a very genuine 'thank you' to Bonnie. Wow.

Damon telling Elena that she looks better as Elena than dressed up in period (ie like Katherine). Oh, I see. And she tells him to stop with the flirting. Friendship only.

Oh, dear. And now Damon and Stefan are sniping at each other (yes, they do it all the time, but it's getting pretty sharp right about now).

Clutching Elena's hand to your chest is not strictly necessary to pass on information, Damon.

They got Damon and Anna (and the tomb!vamps). Good thing that Alaric was on hand to save Stefan.

And John stakes Anna. Damn. I liked her.

Now Elena and Stefan are going to rescue Damon.

Yay, Bonnie! Thank you!

Eeep. Not sure Damon's little talk with Jeremy was the best thing ever. Since Jeremy just heard that life as a vampire is emotionally easier (on the angle of Damon's character growth, though, it was a good step).

Now Bonnie is not down with the shifting of moral boundaries that Stefan and Damon have long lived with and Elena has acclimated to. And we've got a really interesting angle being set-up for the future.

Oh, woah. Damon. Elena. I... don't really know what to say.

Oh, it was Katherine.

Damon is getting played by Katherine again, poor sap. I guess she did realize that he'd moved on. Woah. And now John is dead.

Big things being set up for Season two.

I found that Stefan, once he realized that hey, Damon was having ACTUAL feelings for a person - and that it wasn't actively leading to the death of everything he loves, it could be a good thing. I do like that instead of completely going off the handle, Stefan reacts by saying 'um, no, not going to do this with you' while still being a little nervous because this is DAMON.

But. Elena lays down the rules VERY hard, and nicely, but in a way that makes clear what she wants. Go Elena!

Jeremy and Anna - I was hoping they'd make it work. *hates Uncle John* Seriously. I LIKED HER TOO.

Isobel is a piece of work. I thought it was kind of hilarious that she went in thinking that Damon would react one way and instead it was 'hello, batshit crazy Damon who is protecting HIS PEOPLE' (he used the plural, and yeah, at this point I am including Alaric in there too as they are becoming BFFs -they go on VAMPIRE HUNTING DATES (and back each other up, AND Damon calls him 'Ric'. And Isobel's reaction was 'um, wtf?!'

BONNIE. <3s her madly. Seriously. SHE KNOWS WHO SHE IS AND SHE IS READY TO BE THE SHERRIFF. Also, tellingly, Stefan was conscious of her power, but hey, if it comes down to it, he is going to choose family, and he pointed that out very nicely.

Yay for power dynamics and actual conversations!

Remember how I said that Katherine wasn't a very nice and caring vampire? *giggles* I would like to reiterate that.

This show has GREAT characters, and so many kickass ladies. Who, may be in trouble sometimes? But who are also in control - it's the ladies that are dictating much of the action. :)
