The forces of good have triumphed over the forces of... not very nice!

My ability to access my livejournal and email was... hindered when I discovered that my passwords had stopped working. I had to go to class, so everything got put on hold for a bit. Luckily, when I got home, I remembered that my original email address that I validated the account with was not the current one and was able to request a password reset from that older email address (which y'all may remember -- butterfly_in_motion@hotmail.com).

Nothing on my journal was appears to have changed except for the new email that the person added. Perhaps they simply didn't have time to make changes. Regardless of the reasons, I'm really happy about that and have deleted their email and their ability to use either that address or butterflydm as ways of getting my new password.

I may or may not be able to recover butterflydm@gmail.com, so I'm also using butterflyforreal@gmail.com for now. I will keep y'all apprised of the situation.

Edit: And now gmail has finished investigating my report of my email being snagged and returned access to me so that I can reset the password and such things on butterflydm. Sweet.

Good, that could have been made of epic FAIL.

I'm so relieved! Still not thrilled about maybe not having my email, but losing my livejournal would have been such a sad thing. All my friends are here!

*hugs*

You've had that account for how long? Yeah, that would have not been rad to lose. Email addresses? Easier to replace. LJ names that you've had for 10 years? Not so much.

Much, much easier. The stress would have been... yikes. I don't even want to think about it. Especially since I do make occasional very personal posts under flock or private.

Yikes. Cyber identity theft = VERY SCARY!

Glad you've been able to resolve it so swiftly.

I was very scared! Luckily, I think being forced to go to class and thus not think about it for a while helped me actually think and not panic.

[identity profile] rathanylakan.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Glad that is mostly sorted out.

Me, too. I mean, I still need to figure out the email thing and possibly who the hell 'violentmarv' is, but I'm much more emotionally attached to my LJ than my email.

[identity profile] trepkos.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Have you reported it to LJ?

[identity profile] butterfly.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Not yet. I'm not entirely certain where the right place to do that is.

[identity profile] trepkos.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Abuse team?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, someone actually broke into your accounts? O_O You obviously can handle this however you want, but I'd definitely report this to LJ abuse and also to the provider of the new email they used. They've probably got their own fraud division.

Really happy you got your journal back. *hugs*

I was about to ask you where to find it when I stumbled on it myself.

Now I just need to decided how to word the report.

I know! It was so stressful and the complete opposite of fun.

I hadn't thought of also reporting the person to the email provider. That's a good idea, thank you.

[identity profile] millylicious.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just...trying to figure out what someone would have to gain in doing that?

'I'm gonna hack the LJ of a *really* talented vidder and take all their glory for me, me, me!' ??

[identity profile] trepkos.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
You need to have your lj backed up as well - once they have your password they could have deleted everything.

[identity profile] millylicious.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe they were annoyed that the name butterfly was taken and wanted it for themselves? O_o

[identity profile] butterfly.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I hadn't bothered to back up my lj before now because I wasn't planning on moving, but this is a big reminder that that's not the only reason I might need to do it.

(also, I've now filed a report with the Abuse team -- thanks for reminding me about that)

I'm so baffled!

Especially since it doesn't seem like they did anything. Though maybe they were planning on doing things later and just hadn't bothered yet because they thought their takeover plan was flawless?

I mean, all they did was add their email address to the account. That's not exactly sowing terror and discord.

Jesus; that's weird. I actually second your thought that someone wanted the account "butterfly," which is indeed one cool nick.

But...brr. Crazy people out there.

[identity profile] lasultrix.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
God, that's scary. So glad you got it fixed so quickly!

[identity profile] seacrystal.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
Whew. Glad you got the account back again!

[identity profile] crossoverman.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well this little problem of yours has prompted me to update my LJ password, just in case! Glad everything has been sorted.

[identity profile] pluckyyounggirl.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
That is so weird. And scary. There seem to be some crazy, crazy people out there. I'm very glad you could re-conquer, though!

[identity profile] teskafuture.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you were able to get everything reset again! Must be very annoying to try to get your identity back. Glad you were able to without losing anything!
